Detective qualities

Most people I know enjoy some sort of mystery stories. My mother-in-law loved police and courtroom procedurals. My mother likes detective fiction. There are also murder mysteries, general mysteries, and hard-boiled detective stories, with protagonists such as Sherlock Holmes, Sam Spade, Amelia Peabody, Kinsey Millhone, Mamur Zapt, and Perry Mason to name a few.

  1. Do you enjoy reading mysteries? Definitely. Love ‘em.
  2. What’s your favorite kind of mystery? As with everything else, I prefer a variety. I love hard-boiled detective stories, private eye stuff, some courtroom dramas, female detectives, coroner-detectives, etc.
  3. Do you like plenty of blood and guts, or do you prefer the details to be left to the reader’s imagination? I don’t mind a little blood and guts, though for the most part I prefer stories that don’t go into too much detail there. My imagination is quite good enough. If the story’s description is too vivid it shows up in my nightmares, and I can do without that.
  4. Do you prefer mystery stories based in the author’s time or in previous centuries? The relative time in history can be just about anything, as far as I’m concerned. It’s another area where I like a lot of variety.
  5. Do you prefer mysteries based in your own country, or in distant lands? Prefer? No preference overall, though I go in streaks. I’ve been reading the Amelia Peabody stories lately (half way done with the most recent one, The Serpent on the Crown), and am having a lot of fun delving into Egyptian society near end of the 19th and start of the 20th centuries. I also enjoy reading stuff that is local to me, like the Maxine O’Callaghan stories that are based here in southern California (Delilah West mysteries). Variety, again, is key.
  6. Do you like to figure out the solution, or do you allow yourself to be carried away with the story? Sometimes I manage to figure them out, but it’s really more of a fluke when I do. Generally speaking, I prefer to just flow with the story and not spend a lot of energy detecting the story myself.
