Filming a play September 27, 2005

We had rather a full day on Saturday, what with the filming and all at our house. Our playwright (Johnna Adams), the crew, and a couple of the actors showed up at 8 a.m., and everyone else arrived after 9. People got into their costumes, makeup was applied, the film crew set up lights and camera, then things really got busy. The scenes that were filmed here were a riot. Johnna’s one very funny woman. And naughty! The play is about a young man who feels he has a calling, and starts a new religion. The scenes filmed at my house are a glimpse into the future at how people are living with the belief structure he devised. There are six adults in this marriage, three men, three women. In this first photo, Johnna’s the one with her back to us. She’s giving the actors some direction.

The, uh, “alpha” husband schedules sleeping arrangements, etc. I won’t even go in to what those two stuff animals did on the bed. In this center photo, they’re taking a quick break between takes to get the shine off their faces. We had to keep the windows shut and the fan and a/c off because all the sounds would have made it into the film. It wasn’t the coolest day we’ve had this month, and there everyone was on the heated waterbed in sweats! And the rest of us were quite warm enough, thank you.

In this final photo they’re setting up for the final scene. The room where the camera is is four steps higher than the dining room below. There’s a window at the far end of the dining room that you can’t see from here. That window definitely got in the way. They had to move our dining room table forward about six feet to keep the window out of the shot. Dave’s the one leaning on the low wall. Overall, filming went quite well. They got six scenes filmed, and were done by about 6:00 or 6:30.
I’d tell you more, but I don’t want to give it away, if you happen to be in this area and want to see it. I don’t know about the rest of the play, but this part is quite funny. The part of the play’s title that you need to know is Sacred Geometry, and it’s opening on October 21 at The Rude Guerilla in Santa Ana, California. This play is definitely not suitable to take children of any age to. Johnna’s going to try to get us tickets for opening night. I hope she can!

Hi Laura,
It’s great to see some pics of the shoot at your house. Sounds like a fascinating play!
Your home is cool, by the way.
