Book clubs October 21, 2005
I’m referring
to the reading type of book club, where members all read the same book, then gather to discuss it.
- Do you, or have you, ever belonged to a book club? Not yet.
- Why, or why not? Found out a couple of years ago that a good friend belonged to a book club, and she quite enjoyed it. When I made sounds indicating I might be interested in joining, I was put down completely. Made me go, “Hm.” She didn’t say, and I never asked, if the club was closed to new members, or if she just didn’t want me there. I didn’t want to know if it was the latter, so I refused to ask, and I haven’t brought it up again.
More recently, I have seen a couple of online groups of knitters who read, and haven’t so far been interested in any of the books they were reading. Then there’s also the fact that I have a hard time getting my mitts on newly released books, which most of the clubs seem to read. The libraries around here are awful, and I can’t afford to buy a new book every month, so… That rather does it for me, doesn’t it? Perhaps some day, when my finances improve, I’ll be able to consider it again. In the meantime, I would need a book club that only reads books that I already have lying around the house. “Um, excuse me? Is that book in my library already? Ok. Great. Then the group can read it.” Somehow I don’t think that would work too well…
