Vacationing November 21, 2005

As promised, I have a few photos to share from our little vacation last week at the resort in Las Vegas. We were busy packing and organizing most of the day before. Here’s one of the worst photos of me on record, tired from having been up most of the night before, and having been on the go all day. I’d just packed up some sock knitting stuff—never got as far as the socks—and wondering what to do next. Um, Laura, dear, try getting up and putting the sock stuff with the other, larger, knitting bag. Doh. Didn’t really expect to get to all the knitting that I took along, but one never really knows, and it would be horrid to run out of projects to work on before coming home! Gads. I didn’t realize my hair was that long. No wonder it’s so heavy. I need a haircut…

What’s vacation without a little wine? No, we didn’t drink it all, but yes, the champagne did get consumed on our anniversary. The rosé champagne was left over from our wedding. Still tastes divine. The kitchen table here at home was used to stage all the food and drink to be consumed on our trip… At least, all the stuff that we brought with us. Certain foods were actually brought back home again. For some reason we absolutely had to have a box of chocolate pudding and another of raspberry jello with us. Certain perishibles were purchased at a grocery store there in Vegas. They happily take checks from us California vacationers, making it quite easy to get the few things we still needed. Note: next year we definitely do not need to buy more aluminum pie plates. We have plenty!

We have a timeshare there at the Cancun Resort. Shameless plug: if you think you might want to stay there and/or become a member, let me know… Anyone whose name and address we provide gets extra goodies, plus if you sign up when you’re visiting, we get a little bonus. This resort has three types of rooms: one bedroom, two bedroom, and penthouse (the penthouse has two large bedrooms). All suites have small kitchens, living rooms, and dining areas. At 1600 square feet, the penthouse is bigger than the house I grew up in! This is the night view of Vegas from our balcony. The nearer buildings and palm trees are part of the Cancun resort.

Here Dave’s opening the brandy so he can make me a stinger, my first vacation drink of the trip. The two stuffed animals on the bar traveled with us. Dave’s quite fashionable in his torn jeans. Just the thing to wear in a penthouse suite. Gads. Tres chic. Not.
You can sort of see in this picture that there are vases and baskets lined up on the shelves for decoration. They’re lovely, really they are, but I couldn’t stand it. Within five minutes of setting myself down on the couch with my stinger, I was up and rearranging the decorations. I told myself that I could take it. It didn’t matter that they were all centered on the shelves, lined up perfectly. Ha. I was much happier after I’d rearranged, two items over to the left above the TV, brought in the bouquet from the dining room table to put over the right side of the TV, leaving a big basket that moved to the left side of the left-most bookcase. Ah. That’s much better.
This is the third year we’ve gone to this resort, and we’ve yet to do any gambling. Being broke and not being big gamblers in the first place make it easy, especially since there’s no gambling at this resort. Sure, there are other resorts we could go to, but this one’s far enough away that we really feel gone, we can drive there easily, and it’s close enough that it’s not that big of a deal. Besides, we like the penthouse suite we get when we go. And since this is where we got engaged, we’re
kind of partial to it. With the penthouse’s big-screen TV, surround sound, and DVD player in the living room, and the small but complete kitchen, we don’t really need to go anywhere. The fact that there’s a lovely jacuzzi on the deck filled with nice hot water, ready and waiting to be used at any time doesn’t hurt a bit, either.
This nice little kitchen is equipped with pots, pans, baking dishes, sharp knives, and flatware, dishes, and glassware for six. While there we roasted a chicken and baked a pumpkin pie. Yum. We had lots of other goodies, too.
