Digging December 11, 2005
Sometime yesterday I decided it was high time I dug around in my stash and found something to knit some wrist warmers out of. I hadn’t dug around in my yarns stash for quite a while, and it was fun. I started in here my office, pulling all the Rubbermaid containers off the shelves and pawing through them. I found some lovely yarns, but not what I was looking for, so I braved the trunk in the next room. First I had to un-bury it (horizontal surface gets piled with stuff…), then pop open the lid.
(This old trunk is one that my great-aunt used to use to pack up her big dresses when she went places nearly 100 years ago. She’d stored it in my grandmother’s basement for years, and I think Grandma finally got tired of keeping it, as she offered it to me at one point when I was a teen. I’ve used it for many things over the years. It’s currently home to most of my yarn stash.)

It took a while to dig around, but I found wonderful treasures. Like these fabulous cones of chenille yarn that I got at a parking lot sale for $3.00 per pound…

The Rowan yarn that I’ve picked up a skein here, a 10-pack there, in hopes that some day I’ll have enough to knit a big, comfy Kaffe Fasset sweater…

Left overs from making baby blankets for friends. This collection is staying out of the trunk for now. I have another baby blanket to make…

I also found yarn I forgot I had… I got this from a friend’s mother’s stash. My favorite is the dark blue mohair. I’m sure I’ll find something to do with it some day…

And this is yarn that my friend Mary-Anne sent to me from Canada when she discovered to my delight her horror that she could no longer wear wool…

Ooh, some of this has some possibilities. I grabbed two of Mary-Anne’s neatly wound balls, and my yarn winder, and changed these…

… into these lovely center pull skeins that are much easier to work from.

Shortly thereafter I headed upstairs, knit and frogged a swatch—whoohoo! perfect gauge—and proceeded to start to knit my new wrist warmers using the pattern on Knitty. I’m using one 36 inch long circular needle, and am using the magic-loop method to knit my tube. It’s coming along quite nicely. I’ll post a pic or two of my progress when I get a little farther.

I love to pull through my stash. The problem seems to come when I have to put it all away again. Can’t wait to see your wrist warmers.
