Don’t buy a house with a sewage pump

Sewage pumpNot ever. They give out. Always on weekends and holidays when replacing them is most inconvenient. Then you get to live without letting any water whatsoever go down the drain until they’re repaired. Let me tell you, this is no fun. Yes, we are on a sewer system. But, since we are on the downhill side of the hill and there’s no road below us, we get to pump our waste up to the sewer. We hold it in a tank until there’s “enough,” then the pump kicks in. And it’s so lovely when it dies. The tank is guaranteed to be full. The pump is submerged. And, well, I’m sure you can fill in the gaps.

Our pump went out on Sunday. Silly us. We’d thought it was fairly new. Turns out we got it about four years ago. Turns out, they only have a three to four year lifespan. Joyous day. Yesterday afternoon, instead of doing all the fun stuff we’d planned, Dave got to deal with getting the pump out, etc. It’s frozen solid. Won’t turn. Great. Nothing clogging it. I did some research online, found the pump manufacturer, authorized reps in our area, that sort of thing. Dave called them this morning. Yes, they will take a look at our pump. Probably be a day or two, though. Ha. Lovely. Oh, but they do have a brand new pump. Woohoo! Took the old pump down, got the new one. Dave spent the next couple of hours dealing with that. Poor Dave. But now we have a shiny new pump (don’t know how shiny it is now) installed and working like a champ. Yeeha! And hopefully the old one is reparable. If it is, we’ll let them go ahead and do that, then we’ll have a spare pump ready and waiting on the sidelines for the next time this happens. It’ll still be awful and icky, but at least we’ll be able to swap pumps, and get on with business while the broken one is getting itself fixed. Gads.

I sincerely hope that your Sunday and Monday went better than ours—especially dear Dave’s—did.

That stinks(literally and figuratively)! That’s always the way isn’t it–stuff always breaks on a weekend or holiday and when you really don’t want to dole out the funds to fix it, blah. Hopefully the rest of your week is better :)

It doesn’t matter how you look at it, dealing with sewage is just a royal pain in the … :) I’m glad that they had a new pump, even if Dave didn’t have much fun having to deal with it. Better than waiting days for someone to come out and look at the problem!
