The “stuff” fairy February 24, 2006
Hm. I really don’t think
that Tom would appreciate being called a fairy, but in this sense, he is. Remember the neighbor’s son who I got all that fabric from on Sunday? Well, on Monday morning I was sitting in the kitchen, eating breakfast, minding my own business, when the doorbell rings. You have no idea how odd this is. Our doorbell almost never rings. Especially that early in the day. I peeked out the peek hole, and there was Tom. I opened up the door. The moving van showed up. Can he park his truck in our driveway while they’re there? Of course. No problem. Oh, by the way… Tom had happened across more of his mom’s sewing stuff, thread and stuff, did I want it? Of course! So he hands across this huge plastic bag.
I finally got around to dumping it out today to see what was in it, but first I peeked inside. OMG. Score. This is incredible.
I have thusly inherited tons of thread—mostly old stuff on wooden spools—darning silk, two darning eggs (one wood, one thick glass), one other darning widget with a cool clamp that is decidedly not egg shaped, shears, pinking shears, three nice old fabric tape measures, binding tape, a collection of crochet hooks, a cro-hook, pins,
needles, hooks and eyes, a bunch of thimbles, a handful of buttons, a ripple afghan pattern, a bunch of crochet cotton (a lot of it on spools), and other miscellany. Wow.
Some few of these treasures are already in their new homes. Most of the rest is in boxes waiting to be sorted more carefully, or simply for a permanent home to be found, somewhere, in my office/craft room. Wow.

LOL. Yes, perhaps fairy isn’t the best word for a male who delivers stash. How ’bout stuff gnome?

Oh wow! How fantastic! I inherited my great aunt’s embroidery stuff, which was a similar collection, so I know how amazing it is. Love the old wooden spools of thread!

It’s so wonderful. How nice that this elderly lady had a neighbor who can appreciate handicrafts and sewing. There doesn’t seem to be many of us left!

Lucky lucky you! Years ago, when my motherinlaw died, I got bags of half completed projects that weren’t worth messing with. You made out much better than that. However, I also found a beautiful pink and white quilt in the spare room that was tossed on a bed and had boxes piled high on it. A little soap and loving care gave me a beautiful quilt that resides on the guest bed in my sewing room. I enjoyed visiting your blog - I just joinged the Bloggers Who Embellish webring. I’ll be back. (http://smallripplesinthepond.blogspot.com/)

Wow, that’s too awesome. What a treasure trove! Kind of reminds me of some of the stuff I got from my mom (who doesn’t sew/craft much anymore), though not of the magnitude of your haul!
