It looks innocent enough when it’s sitting there on the cone, doesn’t it? Looks can be deceiving. It’s far from innocent. It’s pretty icky,
actually. Just look at what it did to my hand as I wound it from the cone onto my swift. I showed that hand to my father-in-law as he was breezing by at one point. He wanted to know why they sold yarn like that, with the dye all icky and coming off so easily. I wish I knew.
Part way through the winding process I was somewhat worried about all that dye getting on my swift. Luck held. The swift seems fine.
Now look at the water in the sink. It’s black as night.
And that was part way through the third
washing. It took a while, but I finally managed to get most—I won’t begin to suppose I got all—of the icky dye out of it.
The beast is currently hanging over the shower rod drying. It’s nice and soft now, and I can rub it without getting icky dye stuffs on my hand. Much better. Once it’s completely dry, I’ll put it back on the swift and wind it up into cakes. I’d love to put it back on the cone, but alas, I don’t yet have a cone winder.

Ewwww… don’t you think the company would wash the dye out of it before winding it on the cone? I wonder if that much dye is within environmental specifications. Sheesh!
