Pomatomus socks

As previously Pomatomus 2006-03-20promised, I hereby provide status on my latest pair of socks, the Pomatomus from Knitty magazine.

For a while I thought these socks were going to beat me. I cast on and knit the ribbed portion of the cuff without problem, while completely loving the spring and loftiness of the STR yarn (lagoon). Then I got to the pattern stitch. It was coming out horribly. It just looked wrong. So after about five rounds I frogged it to the edge of the ribbing.

“Aha,” says I, the problem must be something left out of the directions. There must be a ribbed row between pattern rows, and they forgot to say anything about it. So, I knit merrily away, inserting a “blank” row between pattern rows. I got eleven (22 if you count the blank rows) rows into the pattern, compared it with the photo, and Pomatomus 2006-03-22blanched. Nope. That’s definitely wrong. Oh, wait! I see. The instructions are just fine. It’s me. If I could just read a pattern correctly, I’d have it made. Doh.

I ripped it back to the last row of ribbing. Again. This time I had quite a pile of yarn. Fully confident with the information now in hand, I knit the first eleven rows. Looking pretty good. Knit up the next eleven rows. I’ve got it now. Check this out. Hey, Mikey, she’s doing it! And it looks so cool in that lovely STR yarn. Oooh.
