Self-watering containers book April 17, 2006
Well, Dave’s now read the entire book, Incredible Vegetables from Self-Watering Containers: Using Ed’s Amazing POTS System, except for the specific plant descriptions at the end. It’s a good book, over all, giving a ton of information
about soil, composting, planting, pruning, harvesting, preparing a yard for winter—which he also skipped, this not being an issue here in southern California. But there really wasn’t very much at all about self-watering containers. That part was what we needed most. Out of the whole book, there were only four pages about self-watering containers, and only one of those four pages was about how to convert a regular pot, using a store-bought kit, into a self-watering one. In that way the book was disappointing. Quite disappointing. We’d had high hopes of using that information for the plethora of pots we already own (this selection of pots was filled with lovely plants this time last year—all were victims of the house getting painted during the hottest part of the summer, and us with no access to the deck to water them), and getting things to grow in them better.

They actually do dye baby chicks for easter in Japan. It’s a food type dye though so no chicks are harmed in the process. Usually it fades out, before they’re grown out.
