Connect any six books in your library to each other by any way you want. One book will remind you of another because the author’s name is similar, a fictional character shows up in someone else’s book, another author is talked about by characters in a book, maybe the same friend recommended both books, or whatever. Books from a series count as one entry in your list.
I’ve been reading a lot of books of late that feature dragons. In reflecting on that, my brain began echoing the old phrase, “Here there be dragons.” So I start with…
- An atlas. I have this wonderful atlas that my dad bought for me after Dave and I bought this house, so less than eleven years ago. Given Dad’s current state of health, the book is even more precious. And the book itself is cool. It’s large, is printed on a heavy, glossy paper, and is boxed. I adore boxed books, almost as much as I love poring over a good atlas. The atlas leads me to…
- Anne McCaffrey’s Dragonsdawn. I’ve been having fun reading about dragons lately, and Pern is, uh, rather out of this world so it fits both ways—talk about being off the edge of the map! This leads me to…
- Other dragons I’ve recently encountered in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, which leads me to…
- The Dragon and the George by Gordon R. Dickson, a high fantasy story where two of the main characters are moved from our rather humdrum, normal world, to one where dragons dwell, which leads me to…
- Elizabeth George, by way of her last name, and all the wonderful mysteries this creative southern California writer spins in current day United Kingdom. For this I pulled out her first book, A Great Deliverance. One of her main characters, Thomas Lynley, is a Scotland Yard detective (well, he’s actually an inspector, or is the position called a detective inspector?) who also happens to be a Lord.
- And when I think of Lords who are detectives, it’s quite natural to recall Dorothy L. Sayers and her Lord Peter Wimsey. For this I pulled out Have His Carcase. I don’t know if I’ve read this one or not. It’s one that features Harriet Vane. I love her character. Since I don’t remember having read it, I think it’s time to. Maybe it’ll be the next book I pick up. Or maybe not. We’ll see.
Wow. From dragons to the House of Lords. That’s quite a leap. Funny how the brain works, isn’t it?

The Wimsey/Vanes are wonderful — and the old BBC series, with Edward Petherbridge and Harriet Walter is pretty much just as good.
