- What are the last five books that you finished reading? Nerilka’s Story by Anne McCaffrey, The Glass Lake by Maeve Binchy, Crystal Clear by Elizabeth Cadell, A Palm for Mrs. Polifax by Dorothy Gilman, and Ten Big Ones by Janet Evanovich.
- How long did it take you to read them? I read all five of those books within the last three weeks, so none of them took more than four days to read, on average. I think The Glass Lake probably took five, maybe six, days to read, but it is almost eight hundred pages long.
- Did you enjoy reading these books? Why or why not? Yes, I enjoyed them all. Nerilka’s Story filled in a couple gaps left by other books in the Pern series, and was fun, as it was really just about Nerilka. Maeve Binchy has a wonderful style. I always feel like I’m floating through her books. After having read three of them now, though, the story lines are getting a little predictable. It won’t stop me from reading more of her work, however. Elizabeth Cadell’s Crystal Clear was terribly fun. It’s a nice little love story with some wonderful characters, and isn’t too sappy. The Mrs. Polifax books are always fun. If you haven’t discovered her yet, she’s a little like a more modern day Miss Marple, but she actually works for the CIA, so she’s an actual spy. After reading the book I never figured out the title. I wonder what Dorothy Gilman called it before her publisher changed it to this. Neither palmistry, palm trees, nor hands were featured in the story. Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series of books is quite fun. There’s no one like Lula or Grandma Mazur. Stephanie’s car gets burned to the ground within the first few pages, and then the fun starts. The story is chock full of interesting characters, as usual, including a transvestite school-bus driver. I laughed out loud quite a few times while reading this.

Laura, The Mrs. Polifax sound really good. I have an unrelated question. On all the knitting blogs I come across there is a term: SBQ. What is that?
Thanks!

Hi Laura, I’m a regular reader of your blog but this is my first time commenting. I’m glad to hear that you are recovering nicely from your surgery. I went through it six years ago and reading your blog has brought back memories. Lucky you no staples. I had those. Ugh. I was wondering if you could provide me with some type of instructions for the colonial knot since french knots are beyond me too and I’ve got a small brown bear which requires eyes to finish the project. Cheers Judy
