Backing up a bit May 30, 2006
I’ve started this post several times, and, as you can tell, haven’t managed to finish it yet. I’m really quite good at not thinking of unpleasant things, just put them out of my mind. I know it’s not always good to do that, but there ya go. I do it. I have a feeling this is going to end up being quite a long post. If you make it to the end I’ll be amazed. :-)
Anyway… Backing up. Yes. I’m backing up to May 3, the day I had the surgery. I was supposed to be at the hospital by 7 a.m. for a 9 a.m. surgery appointment. The hardest part of that was having no breakfast and no caffeine! As a rule, I don’t do well before I’m fed. I asked Dave to wake me just half an hour before we had to leave so that I wouldn’t sit around being hungry and thirsty, and not being able to do anything about it, which he very nicely did.
We got to the hospital right on time, checked me in, and went over to the surgery unit. The kind nurses got me all prepped, and then we waited. I was in the second surgery slot that morning, and my doctor evidentially ran into something unexpected during the first one, so she was running a little late. Dave was still waiting with me when the door opened again, but this time it opened quite slowly, and I saw a face peeking in. Hm. Then the face smiled, and our good neighbor Bob came in. He’d asked Dave a couple times during the previous few days if he wanted company while waiting for me. Dave declined. He’d be okay. It’s supposed to be a short operation, but thanks anyway. Well, obviously, Bob decided to come along anyway. And he brought coffees and muffins to share with Dave (I was jealous, though too nervous by now to be hungry at all). Bob’s a sweetheart. I liked knowing he was there to wait with Dave, help keep him occupied. It was actually rather nice having him there before I went in, too. He’s skilled at diverting conversations (and thoughts) to more pleasant things.
As I’ve posted before, the operation went well. My doctor was very pleased. Bob was still waiting with Dave when I was in recovery, and my doctor went to talk to Dave. I have no idea how long I was in recovery, but once I woke up I was wheeled into an elevator and up to my room. It didn’t seem long at all before Dave was there to give me a kiss and hold my hand. It was so good to see him. It seemed like ages since we’d been together, and like no time had passed at all, at the same time. He didn’t stay long. I was mostly sleeping anyway, but he promised to come back after he’d had dinner, and see me again. He took the Ipod with him we’d borrowed from a friend so I could have something relaxing to listen to before I went to sleep and after I woke up (I’d definitely recommend this, by the way), and he made sure I had Coco with me to hold onto.

When Dave came back to see me again later on, he brought Le Mutt with him. Whenever guests come to the hospital to visit someone, they have to wear an arm band that is color coded to the area of the hospital where they’re going… Since I was in the maternity ward (this was sort of weird, but an understandable place to put me), the wristband was pink. So, Dave walked into the hospital with the Muttster on his shoulder. Dave got his visitor’s band, then mentioned to the (very young) guard that Mutt needed one, too. He’s a visitor after all. The guard was somewhat flustered. Dave talked a bit more, and the guard shook his head, but put a wristband on Le Mutt. Tee hee. When they came into my room to see me, Mutt was all excited, and showing off his pink band. He even left it on long enough so that I could take this
picture of him with it when I got home a couple days later. :-D
I’m going to skip the rest of the in-the-hospital stuff. Mostly what I did was sleep, and have my vitals taken, so it’s not terribly interesting. I got to come home about mid-afternoon on May 5. Yippee! Dave came and got me. We tucked Coco back into the carry sack with my magazines, a nurse wheeled me out and helped get me into the car, and away we went. I’ve rarely been so glad to get home. The only real challenge was getting downstairs to the TV room where I was to do most of my living during the day for the first week. I managed to get down the stairs and around the corner, and there was Mutt holding a vase of flowers. How sweet! Ooh, and they
smelled so good. Those pale yellow flowers are stock. Yum.
Sometime that day our wonderful neighbor Bob left some antherium on our doorstep. Neither Dave nor I could remember what the plant was called. Mom had telephoned to see how I was doing, and Dave told her about the plant. She knew exactly what it was, but he could hear her blushing over the phone. She finds the plant’s blooms to be somewhat embarrassing. Silly mommy.

I’m going to skip a lot more of the boring details, and go to the more interesting stuff. The next day, I got more flowers. These were from my Mom. Mom told me later than when she ordered the flowers she asked for a bouquet that looked like wildflowers. I think they did a pretty good job of it! The colors were all muted blues and greens. Lovely. I think they did a wonderful job. I especially like those large pale blue things.

That day I also got a card in the mail from Maxine in the U.K. She stitched it for me. Isn’t it awesome? The card reads, “Hope you feel better soon.” The flowers even have pretty little beads for their centers. Maxine, you’re a dear. Thank you!
Time goes by… on Monday I got a call from a very old friend of mine, Denise. Her mother and one of her sisters, Michelle, are visiting from northern California. They’d like to come by for a visit in the afternoon, if I’m up to it. Yes!

They showed up about mid-afternoon bearing cake! They brought a “rocky road” cake, because I’ve been on such a rocky road for so long. LOL It was a very yummy chocolate caked topped with huge marshmallows, chocolate drizzles, M&Ms, and curling ribbon. Uh, we didn’t eat the ribbon, but we did eat the rest of it. It was wonderful getting to visit with them all. After the first few minutes, Dave made his escape. Way too much estrogen and giggling for his masculine sensibilities. ;-) We four ladies had a wonderful, fun visit. It was fabulous seeing all of them again.

A couple days later another bouquet showed up at our door. This one was huge, bright flowers, and was from my aunt and uncle. Aren’t they gorgeous? The tiny roses smelled divine, and everything was so bright and cheery.

Just when I thought all bouquets had been sent and received, I got this delicious cookie bouquet from my good friend Karen in northern California. Aren’t the turtles cute? They tasted good, too.
Everyone has been so wonderful through the last month. Your love and support has been fabulous. Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart. :-)
