Kumihimo August 9, 2006
Oh no! Not again.
I think I mentioned yesterday that I’ve always wanted to learn to spin. Well, I’ve also always wanted to learn to weave.
I even have a small desk-top loom that an aunt or grandmother or someone gave to me when I was in grade school. It came pre-strung, so I basically used up what was already on the loom. I didn’t understand at the time how to re-string it, so it went back in its box only to re-emerge sometime in the last ten years when it took up residence on the top of a cube in my office/craft room.
I don’t yearn to learn to weave very often, maybe about as often as I yearn to learn to spin. There used to be a wonderful antique store in old-town Orange, tucked back in a corner with a lovely garden in front. They had a huge (to me) old loom for sale. No way I could afford it, even when we were making a lot. And then there would have been the problem of where to put it. It was a monster. Would have completely filled either my living room, dining room, or
family room, and it was way too big to fit anywhere else. I knew that Dave wouldn’t go for it. Especially since we could see that it wasn’t exactly in perfect shape. Belts and things were broken or missing all over. Oh, it was a lovely thing, though. I hope someone owns it who cares about it.
Anyway, as you can see weaving and looms attract my attention as much as wheels and spinning do, so what am I to do now that I’ve found out just a tempting bit about Kumihimo? I was reading Theresa’s blog this morning, blissfully unaware, when bam! Smack along the side of the head. This kind of weaving doesn’t take up a whole room. And the band that Theresa made, her first one ever, is awesome. She even provided a link to an online shop where she bought her supplies, BraidersHand.
Oh, man. This is so unfair. I hate being broke.

Kumihimo is awesome! My DD discovered it back in January at a local craft show and she’s made several round braids since. I’ve gotten her to make cording for me - the latest used on a scissor fob I stitched recently.
She hasn’t tried flat ones yet - maybe I’ll take a browse at BraidersHand for her a template and new book or two….
