  1. What is your
favorite kind of reading? Novels? Biographies? Mathematical textbooks?
Novels: fantasy, mystery, science fiction, selected general fiction. Not necessarily in that order. I don’t read biographies. I do occasionally read non-fiction. Sometimes it doesn’t have a thing to do with knitting. A friend gave me a wonderful book about gardening once—not how to garden, but more really about people who garden. It was fabulous. Frances Mayes books about Italy were fun, too. As was Peter Mayle’s A Year in Provence.
  2. What do you like best about your favorite kind of reading? What keeps you coming back to that kind of book? Following a gripping story? Watching characters develop? Being educated about things and places you didn’t know about? Letting your mind relax into someplace completely different? I like stories that transport me to another world, stories that let me temporarily suspend my cares and woes, stories that entertain and are fun. I love gripping, edge-of-my-seat stories. I love suspense, intrigue, the mystery of magic. Good characters are a must. The location, whether real or imaginary, must be cohesive, follow its own rules. Above all, I love a well-crafted tale, especially one that makes good use of the language, is written well (good grammar) as well as well-written (well thought-out plot and characters). If they happen to slip a little education in, especially if it’s geographical or cultural, then that can be fun, too.
