Thanksgiving meme November 24, 2006
I saw this over on Deb’s blog late last night.
- Which do you like better: Cooking at your house, or going elsewhere? Both. I love eating a feast at home,
but I enjoy eating at other people’s houses now and then, too. Grew up going to Grandma’s house for Thanksgiving every year with the family, and since then have shared the meal with a number of different friends either here or at someone else’s house, and quite a few times now it’s just been Dave and I at home together—just the two of us. I love it either way. - Do you buy a fresh or frozen bird? It depends. We knew we wouldn’t have time to let one thaw for Thanksgiving, so bought a fresh one. We’ll probably get a frozen one for Christmas.
- What kind of stuffing? Dave’s mom’s recipe. Yum!
- Sweet potato or pumpkin pie? Pumpkin pie. When I’m really feeling energetic, I’ll make an apple pie to go along with Dave’s pumpkin one.
- Do you believe that turkey leftovers are a curse, or the point of the whole thing? Neither. I love the hot turkey when it comes out of the oven, and I love leftovers, both full repeats of the turkey dinner, and those yummy turkey and cranberry sauce sandwiches.
- Which side dish would provoke a riot if you left it off the menu? Toss up. It just wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without the stuffing, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce.
- Do you save the carcass to make soup or stock? You betcha. Definitely looking forward to this year’s batch of stock and all the fabulous things we’ll make from it throughout the year. Yum.
- What do
you wish you had that would make preparing Thanksgiving dinner easier? Someone else to do all the cleaning. Although, this year wasn’t too bad. We decided to cook a number of things earlier in the day and reheat them when the turkey came out of the oven. This way we were able to get most of the dishes done hours before dinner, and the mashed potatoes and gravy didn’t suffer for being reheated at all—and the cranberry sauce and carrot salad are served cold anyway, so it worked out quite well. Edited to add: After looking at Carole’s blog just now, I have to agree that it would make a huge difference if we had two ovens! Having only one small oven makes cooking a bird and dressing at the same time impossible if we have a big bird like this year. - Do you get up at the crack of dawn to have dinner ready in the early afternoon, or do you eat at your normal dinner hour? We eat late afternoon or early evening (usually), so no dawn cracking for us. This year the bird went into the oven at about noon, and we ate at five.
- If you go to somebody else’s house, what’s your favorite dish to bring? Wine.
- What do you wish one of your guests wouldn’t bring to your house? Can’t think of a time when we had guests for Thanksgiving that anyone brought something we didn’t like.
- Does your usual mix of guests result in drama, or is it a group you’re happy to see? The only time so far that we’ve had Thanksgiving drama is the year the sink backed up less than half way through the day and there was no time to run a snake, so we had to use the tiny vegetable sink for everything, including cleanup. I still shudder when I think of it.
- What’s your absolute favorite thing on the menu? Cranberry sauce.
