Music December 17, 2006
We saw some friends last night. It’s the holiday season, so that’s not unusual. We’ve been going to two or three parties every weekend. Went
to one yesterday afternoon, actually. It was great fun, by the way. But the friends I’m talking about are musicians. They’re in a band. We haven’t gotten to see them for years. They played last night at Gengis Cohen in Los Angeles. Yup. That’s them. The featured band for December, Naked to the World. Kevin Fisher is the lead singer and songwriter who’s sold some songs to the Nashville set and has a platinum record to his name, Dave James plays mandolin (mostly) acoustic guitar and sings backup, Darryl S. is on violin—she’s amazing!—and Darby Orr sits on a stool on the side of the stage, leans against the wall, plays a mean bass.
Okay. Obviously musical taste, like taste in any kind of art, is a highly personal thing. But if you like acoustic guitar, folk music, and you like to rock a little now and then, then you just may like listening to our friends. You can give them a trial spin by downloading an mp3 from their site, if you have a mind to.
We’ve been going to see them perform for years now, but last night was the first night we saw them play with Darryl and Darby. They were marvelous last night. Kevin was in rare form. When they do their final number of the evening they unplug their instruments and walk down the aisle in the audience. Dave came and sat on my Dave as he went by, and gave him a noogie. Too funny. After the show, we all hung around and chatted for a bit. Got hugs. Lots of good hugs. We’ll get together again at Dave’s annual New Year’s party. Until then, we’ll be riding on the fun we had last night… and listening to their brand new CD that isn’t even listed on their web page yet. Cool.
