This and that

President Ford

I don’t know why I was so surprised to hear about the passing of President Ford, but I was. And saddened. I remember Watergate and the Nixon mess fairly well considering I’ve never exactly been a news hound. I always thought that Ford did a fairly good job cleaning up. What a job that was.

In his memory, President Bush has declared that all government offices and agencies will be closed on Tuesday, January 2, 2007. This includes the Post Office. After tomorrow (Saturday), we won’t be getting any mail, and we won’t be able to post anything, until Wednesday, January 3.

I hereby resolve…

Deb’s been doing a great job filling in for me with Booking Through Thursday. Deb, you’re the bomb. Here’s this week’s:

Any New Year’s reading resolutions? A certain number of books you want to read in 2007? Certain genres? Something from your TBR pile? Classics to read? Authors to try? Anything at all?

The only New Year’s resolution I’ve ever kept was the one I made to never resolve anything again. So, uh, no. I have no reading resolutions.

World’s Fair

In 1939 San Francisco World's Fair newspaperhosted the World’s Fair. My parents and my uncle all grew up in that fair city, and so got to go to the fair. Recently my mom was digging around in one of Dad’s drawers, and found a neatly rolled up special edition newspaper from the fair. She brought it down with her to share with my aunt and uncle. Dave and I would have enjoyed seeing it, too, but we didn’t want to damage the paper any more than it already was. The paper is all golden brown with age, and is self-destructing; bits of it fall off if you look at it funny. I got a quick shot of them all pouring over it, though. You can sort of see part of a couple of the photographs between my aunt and my mother. My aunt and uncle took the paper home, hoping to be able to preserve it some way. I hope they’re successful.
