Number of stitches January 18, 2007
When I read Kristie’s comment, the little thought that had been nagging the back of my brain came to the front. I’d continued knitting, and had enough for the next foot test, so I tried it on. Yup. Too big around. Did a little math. Even measured the circumference of my foot—a tad over eight inches, close to eight and a quarter. I counted the stitches I had on the needles. Yup. Too many. By four.
I’ve been knitting off and on for more than twenty years. You’d think I’d be used to the difference that a few stitches can make in something by now, but I’m not.
So, yes, you guessed it. Rippppp. You can see the pile of yarn I pulled out. I now have the stitches safely back on the needles, and I’m knitting away again with four fewer stitches.
To answer your questions, Kristie, my foot is a 6-1/2 wide though most of my shoes are seven mediums, sometimes 7-1/2 medium, especially if I buy them to wear with socks. I’m getting 6-1/2 stitches to the inch with this yarn on size 2-1/2 needles; it’s thicker than what I usually use for socks. I’ll wear these at home with (or without) slippers. I originally had fifty six stitches on my needles, and now I have fifty two.
No, I’m not short. I’m five foot seven, and just have stupid short feet for my height. The feet, they haven’t grown since I was in sixth grade. I still have—and occasionally wear—the waffle stompers my mother bought for me when I was in junior high. They still fit. Isn’t that pathetic? I’m just glad, with feet like this, that I didn’t grow up to be six feet tall. I was supposed to. Thank goodness for small favors (but not small feet).
P.S. I tried using a flash to photograph the navy scarf, but that didn’t really work either. It was all washed out and flat-looking.

That’s awful that you had to frog! I hate it when that happens, but it looks like you caught it early enough that you’re not frogging too much of the sock!
It sounds like you got everything sorted out by eliminating those 4 stitches. Isn’t it awful how just a few stitches can totally throw a project out of whack? Maybe that’s why I’ve knit so many scarves lately!
