Knitting surprise January 24, 2007
My dear friend Deb cleaned out her tea cupboard recently, and we got to talking. Seems one of the teas she and her mom decided they didn’t like is one that I do. Nicely, she said she’d send it along to me. Deb mysteriously didn’t answer any of my inquiries about paying her back for the tea and shipping. Isn’t she a dear?
I found out this afternoon when the mail came just what a dear she really is. ![]()
You see, a much larger box arrived than what I was expecting for one little tin of Peet’s Holiday 2006 Breakfast Blend tea. I opened it up and this is what I saw.
There’s a cute little note card in that envelope with a drop spindle and some glorious yarn. And a lot of tea! ![]()
Wait a minute. What’s that peeking out under all that tea? Oh my. Deb! Oh. Look at that gorgeous—ooh, and soft—yarn! Oh my. It’s merino boucle. Yum. Ooh, it’s smells lovely, too.
I think we need to get a closer look at this yarn.

For the record, this is all the stuff that was in the box. ![]()
There’s the Peet’s blend I was expecting, eight little tins of a variety of flavored teas, and the two lovely hanks of yarn. Oh my. ![]()
And if that wasn’t enough wonderful mail for one day, I got my latest KnitPicks order, too. I’m now ready to start the afghan for Mom. Well, as soon as the navy scarf is done. Or so. I might start something for me in between. We’ll see. I am working on those socks for me, after all.
It’s been an awesome week for mail.
On another note, the socks are continuing. I’m getting farther up the cuff. Beginning to wonder how much longer this two-by-two ribbing is going to continue. Originally I thought I’d finish up the skein, but I have quite a bit of yarn left at this point, due to my absurdly short feet, and don’t want knee socks, so will probably stop before too many more rounds.
Also, the navy scarf for my uncle is getting longer. There are only so many times I want to bore you with photos of a dark blue scarf, so will probably wait now until it’s done before doing that to you again.
Commenting on comments
You all have been simply splendid about leaving me comments lately. Thank you! I’ve tried to answer most of them personally. Your support regarding the toe-up sock has been fabulous. I have a couple things to share, however…

Just out of curiosity- how many stitches per hour do you think you average?
Ha ha ha ha ha. I have no idea. Keeping track of my time stitching is too much like work, so I don’t do it at all. Sorry, girlfriend. The only time in my life I kept track of my time was when I had a needlework class in high school. I got one credit for every however-many hours of work I put in on an outside project, and had to keep track. Ick. That was it. That was my foray into keeping track of time. You’re lucky I’m even counting stitches. I’m only doing it because the piece is square, it’s solid stitching so easy to keep track of, and my dear dad would have wanted to know.
Donna shared a link to a sock calculator—the Sockulator—I haven’t seen before. The Sockulator is used for a standard cuff-down sock. I haven’t played with it too much yet, but it looks pretty good. Donna reports having had some measure of success with it.

OOOH - A link to me! How awesome!!! The sockulator is awesome and makes a real custom sized pair of socks. It is nice to know the socks you are spending so much time making will fit the recipient perfectly.
