Fins and feathers

I got tons done on Colinette afghan 2007-02-12 1the afghan for Mom over the weekend. Tons. Especially on Saturday. It’s getting more yummy with every row. I just want to cuddle up in it.

And look at this. Doesn’t it look like a luscious skirt? Wouldn’t it be Colinette afghan 2007-02-12 2divine to wear this with some boots and a cuddly sweater on a cold day? It’s almost too bad it’s an afghan.

Almost.

Way back on May 19 last year I told you that the Pomatomus socks were nearly done, and I promised pictures.

The next time I mentioned them was this year, just last week, on the seventh. What happened? The toes. That’s what happened. I did them each a different way, and didn’t like the one with the grafted toe. At all. I clearly need more practice at grafting. That would have been fine, though, but the socks were too short. After all that, they didn’t fit. Argh!

Fast forward to last week. Here I am, wanting to start the new feather & fan socks, but I still have these Pomatomus things hanging over my head. I was a good girl—for once—and pulled out those offending Kitchener stitches, pulled back to just before the start of the toe decreases, and set to reworking the toe. Pomatomus 2007-02-12 2

Finished it up yesterday.

Tried it on. Ah. The fit is much better. Toes don’t feel cramped at all.

Measured it against the other completed sock. Hm. They’re the same length. Exactly. Tried on the other sock. Fits like a dream! Pomatomus 2007-02-12 1

I guess the entire problem was that stupid grafted toe.

I procrastinated all these months, and all I had to do was fix one sock toe.

Well. What do you know.

Two pairs of completely finished socks in just three days. Score!

Here is the information on this pair of socks.

  • Pattern: Pomatomus Socks by Cookie A.
  • Yarn: Lagoon Socks That Rock light weight
  • Needles: Crystal Palace bamboo double-point, size 0, set of 5
  • Notes: I had a couple of false starts with these, but once I sat myself down and really looked at and followed the pattern, the socks were no trouble at all. Except for the toes. Found I’m still pathetic at Kitchener stitch. Got around that little problem, finally, and now have a pair of fabulous new socks!

My reward? Besides finally getting to wear my Pomatomus socks? I got to start the socks in Blue Moon’s Hidden Violet, naturally.

I started the feather and fan pattern out of Socks Socks Socks. I’ve made one change so far. Instead Feather & fan socks 2007-02-12 2of doing a slip-slip-knit-p2sso, I’m knitting a slip-k2tog-psso. I like that a lot better. Also, on the next row all of the SSK and the SKP stitches are knit through the back loop. It makes them lay better. I discovered this technique over at Melanie’s blog some time last year, and it works like a charm.
