Gray or grey? May 24, 2007
I habitually spell it with an “a,” but regardless of how you spell it, there’s gray and then there’s gray. Which can be confusing when what you really want is gray. Hm.
What I want is
gray thread that sufficiently matches the gray fabric that’s to be the lining of my new gray knitting bag. I dug through the basket of threads I have that used to be Grandma’s, and came up with some options. I laid out the fabric on the bed, put the knitting bag close by, and lo! the threads looked completely different than they did in the other room.
Hm.
I removed the knitting bag, opened the sliding glass door, and colors appeared closer to what they had been, but still not the same. Let’s try some close-ups, see if that helps.
Not really, no, although it’s better—except for the blurriness.
While we’re here, I’d like to point out a couple things. See that bright thread on the right side of the trio? It’s silk. Yo. Grandma! Yes, she had a nice compliment of silk threads. Stylin’. And the next picture. See those two short spools stacked one over the other? Those are both silk, too, but the thread is thicker. The spools indicate that this thicker silk thread is for button holes and buttons. Do they still make such specialized threads?
Let’s take the fabric and thread back into the other room where there are two windows. Hm. Yup. The colors changed back. Obviously the quality of the light is completely different. Before I choose a thread to sew the bag up with I’m going to go have lunch. Maybe that’ll help.
Hopefully Ricki won’t think that I laid these all out for her, and play with them, move them around, loose them. Hopefully. ![]()
While I’m gone, be sure to check out what Shannon is up to. She’s dying yarn with sunflowers. Wow. Is that ever pink!
Oh, and here you can see my progress on the second of three forget-me-not socks.
P.S. All those thread spools are made of wood. I love wooden spools!

Now you know why I broke down and spent $300 on a full spectrum lamp. It’s the only way for me to tell true colors. I’d have you come over to choose your thread, but my dreaded family is coming here. Yikes! Good luck picking one, but it really won’t be seen will it?
You’re in the homestretch on the sock~ I bet you’re so excited to wear them!

I agree with Kristie. Except that I bought a little, portable, less expensive Ott Lite for the purpose. If you want one, keep an eye on Joann.com. They run a 50% off Ott Lites sale several times a year. That’s where I picked mine up from. Free shipping, too. Woot!
P.S. Thanks for posting a link to Shannon’s blog. That post is the coolest!
