Knitting bag is done

I finished up the knitting bag on Sunday, and I love it. Knitting bag lining

I started with the pinned lining, and sewed it up—after figuring out (again) how to wind a bobbin and thread my sewing machine. For the most part, the sewing machine behaved, and I ended up with a nice bag. Got out the ironing board, pressed the seams, ironed the whole bag. Then I inserted the fabric bag into the knit one, and commenced pinning.

I intentionally made a square(ish) bag, instead of one tapered at the top. I did this for a couple reasons. The main reason is that though I’m a reasonable knitter and I love to embroider, I have an appalling lack Knitting bag pinnedof talent when it comes to cutting and sewing fabric. Face it. Squares are easier to cut and sew than trapezoids. The other reason is that the old bag was made this way, and I really liked it.

Having a fabric bag that is too wide at the top meant that I’d need to make some gathers in the fabric. That took a bit, but I managed it.

After that was done I gathered up everything I’d need, and went upstairs to the family room, where the light is good and there’s a comfy couch to sit on to do the work. First I sewed the bags together, then I fed the edge of the wool bag through the first handle, sewed it down, then the other. After that, I tacked the lower fabric corners to the wool corners so they Knitting bag outsidewon’t pull out, and followed Dave’s suggestion and tacked a center spot at the bottom of the bag as well.

Voila! My bag is done.

Oh, right—as to the thread? I did what I always do when I’m confused. I asked Dave. He picked one for me. Yea, Dave! Knitting bag inside

Have I mentioned that I love my new knitting bag?

Thank you, dear Elsie, for making such a fine knitting bag that shared my life with me for nearly forty years. Thank you, whoever you were, for making such fine handles for Elsie’s bag that I can re-use them for my new bag. Thank you, Deb, for the two wonderful hanks of New Zealand wool. And last, but definitely not least, thank you Tom for giving me your mother’s pile of fabric so that I would have something that matches perfectly—and is stunning—with which to line my bag.

You’re welcome–and the bag looks great!

Oh, and incidentally–the Sid Halley book by Dick Francis? There are a total of four books about Sid, including Francis’s most recent “come-back” book….just thought I’d mention!
