A year ago today

Dad and me c. 1973A year ago today a huge hole formed in my life that will never again be filled, because my dear, dear father died. I miss you terribly, Dad.

Today Dad’s brother and his wife are going to visit my mom. The three of them will have lunch, talk about Dad, and probably go over to Mt. Diablo to where they sprinkled his ashes last summer, under a live oak with a splendid view.

This photograph was taken when I was, I don’t know, maybe about 11, 12, 13 years old? Somewhere around then, anyway. Dad hadn’t grown his beard yet, and didn’t have any visible gray hair. It must have been just before Christmas, as we’re standing under mistletoe. As you can easily see, I’m bundled up in an old wool flannel shirt (I still have the shirt), and Dad, as usual, was warm in short sleeves.

We held each other this way all the time. It was very, very nice.

My dad was always warm enough in short sleeves, too, even though we lived in parts of California with actual winter. He’s been gone for 3 years.

Have a good remembery with your family.

I’m often at a brother-in-law’s place in Danville sometime during the holidays. Mt. Diablo is a good place for such an event.

I am so sorry. I’ve always wanted to be sprinkled back up in the hills of Big Sur overlooking the ocean. Mt. Diablo is a fine place. I’ve had many a wonderful hikes there. It’s a place with a good, deep spirit.

Hugs to you, Laura. I’m typing this through my tears. The love you have for your dad and he for you is so wonderful, and this photo is beyond awesome. How special that you had a dad that was loving and caring the way he was. Not many people get that, really.

By the way, when I was that age (we are the same age, I think) I too wore a shirt like that all the time.
