Casting off

It’s been a while since I shared any photos of the green shawl with you, mostly because though bigger, it really hasn’t changed in quite a while. But I finished off those last two rows last night, and started binding off. I’m getting close to the half-way point, and hope to get it done tonight. I’m not exactly following the pattern for the bind-off, but then, the pictures in the book don’t resemble the instructions… I’m still doing a crochet bind-off, but I’m chaining eight, then doing two single crochets before the next chain-eight. I like it. I think it’ll work out well.

Do you recognize it? It’s the same Handsome Shawl from page 32 in VLT that Wendy’s making.

Tooth

I survived yesterday’s trip to the dentist. They did the normal thing, made the mold to send to the lab, installed a temporary crown, and sent me on my way. Back again in two weeks to get the permanent crown installed, then I can eat like a normal person again… Or as much as I ever do.

Lawrence Block

I just love getting Block’s newsletters. He is super funny. I love the picture he included this time of him in action: at a marathon! You go, Lawrence! If you like having signed first editions, and well, if you like his stories, head over to Block’s site. Everything he sells there he signs. This morning I splurged and spent $10 on an out of print pamphlet (scroll down to the Burglar stories) of a locked-room Bernie Rhodenbarr story: The Burglar Who Smelled Smoke. I can’t wait to read it.

Also in Block’s newsletter this morning was a reference to the Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine. We have some very old copies of this magazine floating around here somewhere. I didn’t know it was still being published. Silly me. To see how it currently looks, I ordered a sample pack of three magazines for a dollar plus shipping. I’m definitely looking forward to getting these. Should be fun. I hope that one of the ones I get has a Lawrence Block story in it. He submits things to them sometimes, after all.

Ellery Queen, eh? Haven’t heard that name in quite a long time! I’m glad that your dentist trip went fine and I can’t wait to see your finished shawl!

So now I feel like a loser. Why oh why didn’t I keep up my crochet skills from when I learned as a child? I’m just not thrilled about “practicing” single crochet to do the edge, so the darn thing still sits in a bag waiting for it’s cast off. Pathetic, isn’t it?
