Queuing up June 19, 2007
I’ve picked out my first project—and the yarn from my stash—for the Summer of Socks, and I’ve ordered the
yarn and beads for Mystery Stole 3. I don’t think it’ll be a problem waiting to start another pair of socks. I only have to wait until the 21st for that, and I’m still not quite done with the forget-me-not socks. Almost, but not quite—I have just under one repeat left before I start the toe decreases. I guess you probably want to know what I’ve chosen for the first pair of socks this summer. I’ll start with Cookie A.’s Monkey pattern, and I’m going to knit them with my Woodland Fleece Artist.
Waiting for the first clue for the mystery stole will be more of a challenge, especially once the yarn and beads arrive, although I’ll be able to make my swatch to bide my time. Then I wait for the 29th to arrive.
No, the hardest part will be figuring out what to knit in the meantime. I’m planning on starting a sweater, but timing could get critical here. Can I knit an entire sweater before the 29th? I think not. Do I have just one project on the needles (the socks) once the market bag is done (by the way, the market bag is zipping along, and will be finished this week)? Perhaps. We’ll just have to wait and see what kind of mood I’m in.
Framed
Over the weekend Dave and I stopped by a very nicely organized little thrift store, and poked around a bit. He came away with some old records
for his collection, and I found this little pink frame. It’s pink, but it’s wonderful. It’s in terrific condition. It has hearts all over it, and the opening, like a lot of old photographs, is three inches square. And it was only a buck.
Don’t worry. It’s not going to stay pink. Once I figure out what picture to put in it, I’ll paint it something appropriate.
Dresser progress
Dave made some great progress on his old previously-blue dresser over the weekend. I think he’s completely done stripping
the old paint off. I’m sure some of you have been wondering… He’s decided to paint it. I know. Seems like a lot to go through just to paint it again, but it’ll be better this way. The different woods would drive him nuts if he were to stain it. Getting all the old paint off does have its benefits. He can now see what kind of shape the dear old thing is really in. There are a number of things that need to be repaired, holes that need to be filled, screws that need to be added to help hold it together. Since he’ll be painting it, he can do some of that, fill the holes, paint over, and none will be the wiser.
Dave talked to his dad, Bill, on Father’s Day, of course, and the dresser featured as part of their conversation. Dave told his dad what he’s been finding, the different woods, how certain parts seem to have been taken from older pieces of furniture. Bill said that Dave’s maternal grandfather was the person who built this dresser, a long time ago. Taking wood from other pieces of furniture would have been a natural thing for him to do back then. They didn’t waste anything. Kind of cool, huh? I love that it’s been in his family such a long time. Even better that it’s getting this face lift, and will be used and loved again.
The only real problem remaining is what color does he paint it? Not white. Nothing too dark, as it’ll be in the center of our walk-in closet. But since it’ll be in the closet, it can be any color, doesn’t have to go with anything. We do tend to rearrange now and then, though, so it may not have permanent residence in the closet. Gads. Do you have any suggestions?

Does the dresser have to be painted? How about a nice sanding with a tung oil finish instead.
Love the Woodland Fleece Artist, btw. It’s so beautiful.

The Fleece Artist yarn is quite spectacular. It will make a beautiful pair of Monkeys for your pal.

The Fleece Artist Woodland will make great Monkey socks.
What about a faux finish on the dresser? There’s lots of things you can do with paint that would be more interesting than just white, yet create a dresser that could be brought out of the closet.

I grew up with an old dresser painted a creamy yellow. It seemed an appropriate dresser color.
I need to decide on my first SOS sock soon. I do know it will be a simple pattern.

That Fleece Artist yarn is stunning; I can’t wait to see how it knits up.
I just finished my Mystery Stole 3 swatch and I’m in waiting mode too(but the HP afghan is taking up most of my crafty time right now). I look forward to seeing what yarn you use and how it looks :)
Happy knitting!

I know I’m a little late in the comments for this post but, since he doesn’t want the different woods to show and not white how about a light mocha color? That would match almost anything if you decide to take it out of your closet.
