Yarn!

I’ve been meaning to tell you for ages about the yarn sale that Kristie and I went to at Newton’s last month for their annual Christmas in July sale. I haven’t been to their sale for eons, and it was quite fun to go again. Of course, the wonderful knitterly company had nothing to do with that. Right. If you believe that, I have some property for you…

Anyway, I love Newton’s sales. The yarns in the parking lot are mostly $4.00 per pound, and the ones inside Bulky softball cotton - navyare 40% off cones, and $5.00 for hanks unless they’re special fibers, then they’re $7.00 per hank. You know, it’s really hard to argue with getting 1,300 yards ($51.00 worth) of their fabulous bulky softball cotton yarn for only $10.00. It was likewise quite difficult being forced to bring home 640 yards of a sumptuous French ribbon yarnFrench polyamide ribbon yarn, $71.00 retail, for $20.00—can you say “summer top”? I know. It’s a chore. But someone had to do it. Someone had to go to this fabulous sale. Since we live here, I guess we were elected. Drat.

We each got a hank of some wonderful green Merino Felt to make Amanda’s Squatty Sidekicks out of. The pattern calls for 100g of yarn, and my hank ($5.00!) is 110g. Should work to perfection. I also bought a 1,958-yard cone of a lovely navy cotton yarn, Americana; a total of 3,300 yards of a mercerized pima cotton in a slightly yellowed green that is so soft you can’t believe it’s cotton; a cone of mystery yarn in a beautiful green; and two cones of a fine rayon laceweight yarn that is stunning, one cone is blue, the other burgundy.

You won’t believe some of the yarn that Kristie got that day. But I’ll let her tell you about that herself.

Merino Felt - green Americana - navy Pima cotton - green
Green mystery yarn Rayon laceweight - blue Rayon laceweight - burgundy

After we were done clearing out our bank accounts (actually, the total bill was amazingly low, especially when you consider what we got!) we swung by Mattern’s Deli and picked up sandwiches and good German beers for lunch, then went home and relaxed a bit, talked to Dave, fondled our yarns, that sort of thing. All in all it was a fabulously fun day. Clapotis 2007-08-02

I made a good bit of progress on my mystery stole between yesterday evening and the wee hours of this morning. Only three more rows of flowers to do, then I’ll be ready for clue 5. Egads. It comes out tomorrow. I better get going! I also made progress on my Clapotis. Definitely loving this yarn. I love the way the yarn’s variegations and the columns made by dropping the stitches go in opposing directions. I think my grandmother would have appreciated the visual interest in this piece.
