Knits

IK fall 2007I’ve been pawing through the Interweave Knits fall issue that arrived the other day. Tangled YokeAt first glance—and second through fifth—I decided that I have got to knit Eunny Jang’s new pattern, Tangled Yoke. OMG. It’s fabulous. Love at first sight. I don’t know how in the world she had time to design a sweater with all the stuff she was doing getting her very first issue of IK out the door, but she did. Another drop-dead gorgeous sweater is the Dickinson Pullover Dickinson Pulloverby Kathy Zimmerman. I love it. I’m hoping that some yarn or other that I already have in my stash will do for these sweaters. Ooh, yeah.

In addition to pulling together a nice collection of knitwear, Eunny did a little redesign between the covers, bringing large photographs of each of the designs all in one place near the front of the magazine, and separating the patterns themselves to the rear of the issue—there are page numbers everywhere, referring you back and forth so it’s easy to find the big picture from the pattern page, and the pattern from the picture page. Nice. There are some interesting looking articles in this issue, too. Definitely looking forward to spending more time with my magazine.

Little by little I’m trying to catch up on my blog reading. Late last night I was perusing a couple blogs, and found to my delight that Domesticat has released a wonderful sock pattern called Drunken Bees Socks. I wonder about knitting them and wearing them with Anne’s Bee Shawl. Li got the stitch pattern from a Japanese book, Knitting Patterns 300. I checked out her link to Amazon Japan’s web site, put it and one other Japanese stitch book in my cart, and found out, to my horror, that shipping would be $30 for these two slim volumes. Egads. Sure wish I knew someone going to Japan who could pick up some Japanese stitch books for me. They’re fabulous. That shipping sure isn’t in my budget right now, though. Ouch. Guess I’ll be waiting for a while to get any Japanese books.

I stumbled across another wonderful new free sock pattern: Elinor Brown’s Poseidon Socks (links to a .pdf file). Nice stitch pattern that she knit up in a gorgeous color reminiscent of a tropical sea.

I can tell I’m starting to get over my sock aversion. I’m looking fondly at new sock patterns again, and wondering what kind of stitch pattern to use on the socks I’ll be knitting up for Dave with the Maizy I got from Crystal Palace.

In case you were wondering, the 72% cacao Ghirardelli Twilight Delight dark chocolate square that Dave brought home for me last night worked a miracle cure. I’m feeling much more myself again today. Finally. Woot! Oh, and I wasn’t the only one who wasn’t in the mood to go to the concert in the park last night, so we didn’t go. I got more knitting done. Between that and the chocolate, I’m feeling much better.

Edited to add: Karen wrote to let me know that the Captcha software I was using to keep away the spam that Akismet doesn’t catch wasn’t working at all, and that because of it she couldn’t comment. I deactivated that software, so if you’ve been having that problem, too, it should all be fixed now. Thank you, Karen!

I love the new Zimmerman sweater–wow! When I got my magazine that was the one that really stood out to me–doesn’t it look perfect for curling up in and reading a good book? Eunny’s sweater is stunning(as is all of her stuff really); I remember when she started it. I’m thrilled she’s editor of Interweave but I really miss her blog.

Yours is the first “wow” review I’ve heard of the Fall IK. I have it but have yet to open it. Sounds like there’s new life in the magazine!

Glad you’re feeling better and Dr. Chocolate did the trick ;o)

Glad to hear you’re feeling better.

That sweater seems to be the big hit of the issue. I think everyone is going to knit it, or at least plan to.

I looked at it seriously but decided I’d want to make enough changes that I really couldn’t call it Eunny’s sweater any more. That’s OK. There are some interesting techniques in the pattern.

I liked the new layout, too.

Glad to hear that you are feeling much more yourself. Can you send some of that my way, please?

I agree that the design changes to the Fall IK are all for the good. I really like the page refs. I swatched for the minimalist cardi last night, as it is exactly the sort of sweater I need. I got gauge with Cascade 220, so I hope to be off and running. Eunny’s cardi is gorgeous, and I think I will be on the lookout for yarn for it.

Thanks for your critique of the new Fall IK. I really liked it too. She has included a nice mix of articles to read and patterns. I didn’t renew my subscription to Knitters, but I’m definitely going to renew IK
