Tinkering

Swatching laceI’ve been playing. With my knitting stitch books and a ball of yarn. Tinkering. With Anne’s help I figured out how to knit a stitch I thought I really liked, but ick. Way too hard of a maneuver. See that blob down there sort of near the bottom? That’s one of my better attempts. There are a number of things in this swatch that just didn’t work at all. The large drop-stitch pattern I love. I tried it, though, with a stockinette background, and don’t like it as much as with the original garter background. Besides, it goes better with those shells on top when it has the garter background. Something magical happens to plain old garter stitch when it’s knit with lace weight yarn.

I tinkered with some smaller single-stitch swatches, too. I experimented with a new (for me) cast off technique. It’s easy to perform, and is a lot more stretchy than the one I normally use. All good.

The only non-tinkering knitting that got done all weekend was work on clue six of the mystery stole. The rows are definitely getting longer. I’m about &fract13; done with clue six. None of my other knitting has grown at all since I started tinkering with the lace. I need more hours in a day, or less sleep, or something.

I’ve been dreaming over on Amazon again lately. Check out the newer, much longer, knitting wish list in my sidebar—right side, just above the blinkies. I added a bunch of stitch dictionaries that I don’t already have. It’ll be quite a while, I’m sure, before I can manage to get many (any?) of these books. A girl can dream, can’t she? It’s always nice to have a list, too. Just in case.

Thank you one and all for participating in my comments test. The plug in seems to be functioning again. Mysterious. I’m still desperately behind in blog reading. If it seems like I haven’t been visiting for a while, it’s true. I’m sorry. This may continue for a little while, too. Drat.

I love the drop stitch pattern, that’s one of my favorite stitch patterns. I like it in garter stitch too.

Good luck with the lace testing. I own a bunch of stitch pattern books. The second knitting book I ever bought, back when I was 17 and right after the How-to-Knit book, was a stich pattern book. I’m sure it was one of the Harmony books, though I don’t still have that copy.

I bought a boxful of books from the Knit Picks sale, so I’m not feeling too book-itchy right now. 40% off with no sales tax or shipping was too good a deal. Plus, isn’t it so satisfying to have a nice stack of new books waiting to be looked through?

Great tinkering! Some weekends are meant for tinkering. The yarn is a pretty color too.

What a neat way to learn something new, and what a fun person with whom to do it!

You definitely have a wonderful mentor to help you out with your design, but I doubt you’ll need her much. I’m so anxious to see what you come up with.
