Color and knitting news

Color

Kristi (Fiber Fool) is doing a little color research. Here are my answers:

  1. What is your current favorite color? Just one? I was going to say that I’ve never had just one favorite color, but that’s not quite true. It would be more accurate to say that since I became an adult I’ve always had multiple favorites all at the same time. Green has always been at the top of my list, but it has to be one of the “right” greens: mostly blue-y greens and dark olives. That being said I also love a grand variety of blues and blue-y reds. Purple has always played an important part of my color-life as well.
  2. Has your favorite color changed over the years? Not appreciably, no. I can’t say that it has.
  3. Is your current favorite color one that is currently trendy? (Do you see it in the fashion rags or on the clothes rack or in the linen aisle right now? How about five years ago?) My favorite colors, which are often the colors which look best on me, go in and out of style all the time. There have been some years when I haven’t been able to buy a thing, because the stores were filled only with colors that looked truly heinous on me. The current spate of browns I’m getting along with, likewise the nice rich, blue-y reds.
  4. What is your favorite color combination? I can’t say I have a favorite color combination.
  5. Is that combination a popular one? (Is it use in prints you see in the stores and catalogs and magazines now? How about 5 years ago?) I have absolutely no idea. Honestly. Sorry about that.
  6. What is your favorite way of using color in your knitting? (Are you a stranded knitter? Do you prefer simple stripes? Do you prefer just accents at the hems/collars?) I like knitting intarsia when I use color in my knitting. That and variegated sock yarns. Those are fun. If I ever learn to knit with both hands, I’d love to try my hand at some Fair Isle, but cringe at the thought of all those tangled strands that come from twisting until I learn that technique. I don’t do stripes or collars that are a different color than the rest of the sweater. I haven’t yet knit a sweater with colorwork at the hem, but I like a lot of those sweaters.
  7. What colors look good on you? Mostly the colors that I gravitate toward are the ones I look good in. I like a lot of color saturation. I’m fair skinned with dark hair—well, mostly—and eyes, and need something to brighten me up a bit.
  8. What colors look bad on you? Yellow, orange, tan, pastels, orange-reds, rust. Shudder the thought. Those colors all either completely wash me out, or make me look sick.
  9. Do you wear colors that don’t look good on you just because you like them? I’ve been known to wear some pinks that I know don’t look good on me. Mom put me in pink whenever she could, and it took years for me to get away from that. I’ve pretty much stopped doing that, though.
  10. What is your favorite neutral color? black/white/ivory/tan/brown/gray—if brown or gray do you prefer cool or warm versions of those or does it matter? And, how dark? Black, cream/ivory, brown, gray. Again, usually with lots of pigment, so darker, not pastels. I wear pure white sometimes, but look better in the creams and ivories. Cool grays, definitely. Browns? Haven’t yet learned which are cool, which are warm. Hm.
  11. Is there a sweater pattern that uses more than one color that you’d like to make, but you wish to change the colors from what is published? If yes, which one? What do you not like about the published colors? Too many to list. One that I did make, is the Kaffe Fassett sweater I knit last summer. I completely changed all the colors. Every one. And I love the results.

Knitting news

LuannaBerroco released a couple new free patterns last week. This one, Luanna, I find interesting. I look at it and think that I’ll really like it, but I don’t. I’m not sure why. Somehow the pattern just.doesn’t.work. Is it the rolled collar? The way the lace stops part way up the bodice, but extends the full length of the sleeves? I don’t know. Can’t seem to put my finger on it. On another note, this week’s newsletter featured this. Color me crazy, but I have absolutely no idea what they were thinking. Seems a complete and total waste of perfectly good yarn to me. Knit Picks Harmony needles

Have you seen the new Knit Picks needles? They added nice, pointy wood needle tips to the Options needle family. They call them Harmony. The colors in the wood aren’t harmonious to my eye—I’d prefer a natural wood color—but I’m looking forward to giving them a try at some point, in spite of the wild colors in the wood.

Did you know that the fall Knitty is out? Released yesterday. Though I love the look of the featured shawl, Muir, I doubt I’d ever knit it. The only pattern, at the moment, that tempts me at all is Anne Hanson’s pattern, Totally Autumn. It’s a lace blanket, but since it’s knit with bulky yarn and big needles it’d knit up in a snap. Looks like fun. I wouldn’t do it in those colors. I’d definitely choose something cooler. Something that would complement my dark blue couch. Other than that, the issue is pretty much a bust for me. I don’t knit hats or scarves, and don’t care for the sweaters or socks this time. Disappointing.

I liked Anne’s Totally Autumn best in the new Knitty myself. I wish more sweaters were designed without raglan sleeves, I look awful in a raglan sleeve. Luanna is too busy I think, and the crocheted wedding cake is just bizarre.

I think you are the first knitter who I’ve seen say they like to do intarsia. I’ve never done it, but a lot of knitters seem to avoid it, I guess because they don’t like to weave in the ends.

I always think of “blue when I think of your blog. You always choose such pretty shades for your projects, but I always like the blue ones best.

Re: Luana, there’s something uneven going on with the collar. And Brenda is right: it is too busy for the weight of that yarn.

I like several things in the Fall Knitty, including Muir and Anne’s blanket. Of course, I live in a hat and sweater climate!

Thanks for playing along on the color meme :-)

I kind of liked this Knitty. There were certainly patterns I didn’t much care for, but there were more patterns that stood out to my eye. Will I knit any of them? I don’t know. Not likely anytime before the New Year for sure…
