South Seas Stole

South Seas Stole done 2

  • Pattern: My own devising
  • Yarn: JaggerSpun Zephyr Wool-Silk 2/18, 1,000 yards, Aegean Blue
  • Beads: Size 8/0 beads, silver lined from Fire Mountain Gems
  • Needles: Size 5 (3.75 mm) Addi Lace, size 5 (3.75 mm) double pointed, size 13 (.85 mm) crochet hook for beading
  • Elapsed time: August 21 through September 28
  • Finished size: 24 x 72 inches
  • Notes: You know what? It takes a lot longer to knit a stole when you have to come up with the pattern yourself as you go along. It was South Seas Stole done 1a lot of fun, though, and very satisfying. Overall, I am rather pleased with myself, especially as this is a first effort at lace design. I rather like the way the waves in the border crash into each other at the far end of the stole. That little bit of inspiration was provided by Karen. The seam foam end is a little wider than the rest of the shawl, though. I’ll have to come up with something to fix that before releasing the pattern. I used a provisional cast on, and grafted the last thirteen stitches together.

If you’re interested in test knitting this stole for me, please let me know. I want to release the final pattern in November—I hope that’s not too ambitious—so I’ll need test knitters that can work in that timeframe. I’ll also be setting up a Google group so we can keep in touch easily. I have my test knitters. Thank you, everyone!

Very nice job, Laura. I bet with all the different patterns you had to meld that the shawl did take much longer to design than to knit. The two patterns I’m working on are simple and still I wonder when I’ll even get them done.

Pick me, pick me! I’d test knit that in a heartbeat for you! It’s so absolutely stunning Laura. I’m not sure I’m the best choice as a test knitter seeing as I’ve only knit a couple of shawls, but if you don’t have more experienced lace knitters volunteer, then I’d be more than happy to test knit it.

You must be so thrilled that it’s complete. The photos look stunning, but I’m sure it’s even more so in person. WOW!

It is just so Just beautifully delicate, yet I wouldn’t hesitate to wrap up in it at the first sign of a chill!

BTW, thanks for the nod. :o)

That is just stunning! Congratulations on finishing your very own pattern–what an accomplishment. I would test knit for you but I have a lot of projects I need to get done and I know I wouldn’t be able to have it done by November. I look forward to getting the pattern though :)

Gorgeous! You’ve done a great job of combining the different lace stitch patterns, and the way you included the beads highlites them nicely.

I’m a fledgling lace designer too, and know how tricky it can be. Good on you for making the (tough) decision to publish!

    I love the stole!
    I love the blue colour!
To testknit would have been very funny but I´m out of yarn or should I say: I have ordered JaggerSpun Zephyr Wool-Silk 2/18 in three different color but one was out of stock. Feel sorry for it but I have to sit down and wait for the release.

It looks great! I especially love the “circles”. Do you come up with each pattern yourself or did you find them somewhere and then put them together?

I just love this… AND i won’t to do it ;) But did I have the right yarn for it? (This beutiful jummie yarn it’s NOT to buy in my country :( )
And the needle… Addi Lace - noooo… Can’t buy it were I live :( Needlesize… USA or mm?
Maybe I have some yarn that will work, not a clue what it is ;)… but not the beeds… brown-black yarn… to dark? but the beeds… think about it! ;)
    Hugs… from Sweden…

Absolutely gorgeous. I’d love to see a picture of it being worn to get a better sense of the scale. But it’s so lovely, and such a lot of good work. You must be so proud!

Wow, that stole is very pretty. I love the different pattern pieces. Keeps it from getting boring down the road, like some other ones. I found this through Kristie. Too bad they are already knitting it. Maybe I’ll get the pattern when it comes out.
