The year of the rat February 7, 2008
I pretty much always miss being in San Francisco, but especially at times like this when big celebrations are going on, and there’s partying in the streets. It all seems bigger than life somehow. When I was a kid Dad got me Chinese New Year posters every year, the same ones that decorated all the shop windows in Chinatown. Their bright colors and cheerful designs papered my walls for many years. It was always fun, too, to watch the celebrations. Especially at night. The Chinese really know how to throw a big party with a good parade, and lots of lights and color. I even learned to wish someone a happy new year in Chinese—gung hay fat choy—although I wouldn’t be at all surprised to learn that I actually pronounce it completely wrong and actually insult someone instead! Google has a fun logo today to help celebrate.
I’ve been making good progress on the scarf I’m knitting with Nancy’s luxurious EvolutionTM lace weight yarn. Still thinking that this is more of a fingering weight yarn, but it’s so soft that I don’t really care. If this version of the pattern works out the way I think it will, the finished scarf will be about 60 inches long, and six or seven inches wide.
Kristie’s busy test knitting the wide scarf version of the pattern for me, and Kim (sadly blog-less) is testing the stole version.
I have a couple more pattern repeats to do before I start the border on this side. If all goes well, I should be starting the border this afternoon. I hope to have some sock pictures for you tomorrow.
If you celebrate the Chinese new year, I hope you have a good one.

The skinny scarf is looking like it’s coming along quickly and beautifully. Are you going to have enough yarn?

I must have that pattern!! It’s beautiful. Today my cousin asked me if I would knit her some scarves for her Relay for Life (do you have Relay in California?) auction. I.must.have.it.
