In Finishes, Knitting, My designs by Laura | 3 comments

- Pattern: Illusions, my own devising.
- Yarn: Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Sock, Sand Ridge, 2 hanks.
- Needles: Size 0 (2.0 mm), Crystal Palace bamboo DPNs, set of 5.
- Gauge: 8 stitches/inch
- Elapsed time: January 22 to February 14
- Notes: Once I decided on this stitch pattern, the socks knit up very quickly. The pattern is easily memorized, and I found it to be a joy to knit—it was easy enough that I didn’t have to pay a whole lot of attention, and at the same time there was enough going on that I wasn’t totally bored. And as you can see, the pattern holds up well to a multi-colored yarn. The stitch pattern is reversed for the second sock, making the illusion sort of shimmer from one foot the the other.
Though I knit these socks to fit my own feet, if you’re an experienced sock knitter it would be fairly simple to add 8 stitches (one pattern repeat), and make them for a larger foot—or, conversely, to remove a pattern repeat or two, and knit them for smaller feet. If you prefer knitting your socks toe-up, that could easily be arranged, as the stitch pattern looks the same knit from the opposite direction.

I love this sock pattern! I have some Shepherd Sock in my stash, and I might have to buy your pattern for it!
