Cables and socks

The socks

I’ve loved knitting cables from the very start. A simple cable looks so complicated, but in reality is quite easy to knit. Complicated cables, when broken down, line by line, are still simple to knit. The best part is that they’re immensely satisfying.

Take this cable for instance. Looks terribly complex, but each section is just two, three, or four crossed stitches, many of which even I can do without a cable needle.

The big, complicated cable you see above (photos one and three) is the front of the sock. The simpler cable (photos two and four) is repeated three times around the sides and back of the sock. The two-stitch rope separates all elements. The big cable with a rope on either side of it will continue down the top of the foot.

Tenaya

As I told you before, I finished up the mitts the end of last week. Kristie helped me out by taking pictures for me on Monday evening. Thank you, Kristie! I love how they turned out, especially with that lovely green bag under them, and no lily white leg skin showing.

Tenaya

  • Pattern: Tenaya, my own devising. Pattern to be released soon. Get yourself on my announcement list if you want an email message when the pattern is ready.
  • Yarn: Smooshy from Dream in Color, in Nightwatch, about 150 yards that were left over from knitting Mingus.
  • Needles: Size 1 (2.25 mm), Knit Picks nickel plated DPNs, set of 5.
  • Gauge: 7½ stitches per inch in stockinette
  • Elapsed time: June 20 to June 27, 2008.
  • Notes: Talk about a quick project! I can’t believe I knit this pair of mitts, including all the design work, in a week. I have discovered two things about mitts: 1. They’re great projects for using up left-over sock yarn, and 2. They’re great small projects for knitting when it’s hot out. Oh, yeah. And they’re fast.

Yes. The mitts are addictive. I think I knit six or seven pairs over a five month span.

I’m so in love with the cabled socks. They are going to be stunning!

I’m glad the photos worked out and you didn’t need a re-shoot. I thought I was a mitt person, but I didn’t even finish the last pair I started and I only wore the one pair I did complete (Fetchings) once or twice. I’m so weird.

Love the mitts. I’ll admit I had to click on the last photo, I couldn’t figure out what the heck it was. Your thumbs!! I need some sleep.
