The price! July 8, 2008
I filled up the tank yesterday, and about had heart palpitations. This Union station is near my house, so it’s handy. It’s also handy because it’s usually has about the lowest price for a several mile radius. And with the price of gas, who can afford to drive very far to save a few cents? Gads. This is amazing. It’s pretty obvious to those around here that the price of gas in southern California will be more than $5.00 per gallon before the end of the month. For regular. My car runs better on super. I get better mileage with super, too, and have lower repair bills. But still. Ouch. I remember being outraged when a gallon of gasoline went up to $.35. Back then the 13 gallons of gas that I bought yesterday would have been $4.55 instead of the $62.01 that I spent. I like the older price better. Back then it was actually worthwhile to stop by the station and put a buck’s worth of gas in the tank. It actually got you somewhere. Now that same buck will hardly get you out of the station’s driveway. Disgusting.
Moving on…
Since we sit outside when it’s nice out, which this time of year is most of the time, it gets rather too dark to knit towards the end of knit nights. This week I actually planned ahead—I know, stunning—and brought the bag that needed
to be ripped out, and my ball winder.
The bag now looks like this.
Yup. It’s no longer a bag. It’s a pile of cakes of yarn. I’m ready to set needles to it again, with a new pattern. Keep your fingers crossed.
A little progress was also made on the cabled sock in the Posh Yarn. Still loving the yarn. Just look at the stitch definition.
The only problem is that it’s taking forever to knit it up.
Oh, no fault of the yarn. It’s perfect. But it’s so soft that I stop part way through every round to pet it. Try it on. Pet it some more. All that really cuts into the knitting time, and brings measurable progress if not to a screeching halt, at least to a bare minimum.
Another swatch for Karen’s shawl got itself blocked yesterday. There are a couple of different stitch patterns represented here. Both are good ones. I haven’t decided if they’ll be in this shawl or not. I clearly need to do some more swatching—which is a good thing, since I haven’t heard back from Karen yet on the bead question. I may have to resort to using the phone to find out. Horror. I hate, hate, hate picking up the phone and making a call. I used to call people all the time. But after two years of doing telephone computer support I have the hardest time making myself do it any more. Shudder. At least I’ll answer the phone these days. Back when I worked telephone support I wouldn’t answer the phone at home. At all. I’d sit there, listen to it ring, and let the machine get it. Poor Dave. He had to do all the phone-answering back then. He had to try to explain to Mom why I wouldn’t talk to her, call her. It was her fault. It wasn’t his. It was the job. She never did understand.
I’m blathering. I’ll stop now.

Oh Laura, I totally get the phone phobic thing. Part of my reaction to a too busy lifestyle was to never answer the phone at home and to rarely place a call (I still have the same mindset). If I could have gone off and lived under a tree with wild hair and draped in fiber, I would have.
I’m loving both your cabled sock and the shawl-in-progress, your lucky friend will adore it. More beautiful patterns, you amaze me!
I wanted to let you know that I read your blog regularly, but don’t post as often as I might because I have to switch to another browser to do so.
So even though I may not be commenting, I’m still out there lurking & reading, under my tree and enjoying : )

Just so you don’t feel quite so bad about the gas:
I filled up my tank here in the UK last week and it cost me $167. That’s 12 balls of Kidsilk Haze I spent on gas. Ouch.

Hi Laura,
Just popped over to say ‘hi’ and to tell you how much I love reading your blog and seeing your great knitting designs.
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you ‘in person’, but know that you’re in my thoughts. Take care.

Move to the Midwest HEHEHE :-) We avg 3.94 a gal but that depends on where you are, some places are as bad as So Cal :-(
So far I’m loveing the heart shaped lace swatches! They go perfectly with the yarn and because its for a friend of yours!

And here I thought I was the only one with the phone issue. I hate making calls. And I’d just as soon not answer the phone, given the option — you never know what’s waiting on the other end. Sigh… The shawl swatch is looking good — I can’t wait to see what you settle on :)

We went through Bountiful, Utah and it was $4.00 a gallon. We thought we’d died and were in heaven, but then we remembered it was just Utah, ;-)
I can’t wait to find a spare moment to work on the sock. Never a dull moment when family is in town, but it’s been a relatively good day.
That shawl is going to be soooo beautiful.
