More mitts September 1, 2008
I liked knitting the Tenaya mitts so much that I decided another pair was in order. I was having so much fun knitting the last pair of socks, that I thought matching mitts would be just the thing. A new pattern was born—Sugar Push—and is currently being test knit by the lovely Jocelyn. They knit up super fast. Mine are done already. I would have posted about them last week, but our Internet connection at the resort in Palm Springs was basically non-existent (long, ugly story), so I couldn’t. Anyway, these mitts practically knit themselves. They were done only three days after I got the idea for them. Jocelyn’s making great progress with hers, so I see a pattern release soon, very soon. As with Tenaya, you knit two identical mitts, and they’re good for either hand. None of this bothersome reversing shaping nonsense for the second mitt.
I managed to finish up the second West Coast Swing sock last week. I even ripped out the original, too large sock, and have most of the third one done. I finished up the gusset yesterday, so am nearly done with that pair. I decided to rename these socks, though. You see, I have other plans for the West Coast Swing pattern name, something involving sleeves… The socks had to be renamed. I did some digging, and came up with another related name for the socks: Flying Lindy. The Flying Lindy is a fast version of the West Coast Swing.
The room we had in Palm Springs last week was nice. Larger than the one bedroom unit in Las Vegas, but without the extra ¾ bath (we missed having that extra bathroom). The kitchen was big enough to move around in, and had about twice the counter space. Yea!
The weather there was awful. It was hot, 105°F to 110°F every day, but instead of the dry heat we were expecting (0% to 20%) it was humid—60% to 80%. Ick. The last morning there we at least got a little benefit from all that humidity by way of a lovely summer storm.
We had a nice covered deck outside our living room, and were high enough that we looked out on a date palm in full bloom. The bees sure liked it. The blossoms smelled nice and sweet.
Dave took a number of photos of the windmills on the way home. There’s a good size windmill farm in the foothills as you approach Palm Springs. According to the website they’re temporarily closed for renovations. This would explain why a lot of the windmills weren’t turning. I’m glad to hear they’re doing renovations—harnessing the power of the wind is a fabulous source of electricity.
The absolute best part about going to Palm Springs is that it’s only 90 miles from home, and it’s an easy drive. It was hot. It was humid. The management at that particular timeshare sucked. I really don’t have any burning desire to return. We have a second timeshare out there that we might try in winter sometime, but other than that… I dunno. I just don’t see the appeal. It might have been better if we’d been able to eat out at all while there—I understand the restaurants are quite good—but we didn’t. If all I’m going to do is sit there and knit and watch movies, I’d rather go the extra miles to Las Vegas. At least there the management is awesome. I’m so ready at this point to stay home for a couple of months. I don’t know how people travel all the time. Don’t get me wrong. I love going new places. But having been gone two of the last three weeks, I’m done in for the time being.

I like your windfarm pics. I agree -it’s a great way to get electricity.
Does it use up the wind…I mean is the wind less the other side of the wind farm after its made the electricity? Else how is energy created without it being used? It’s something that I’ve been wondering about for a while but I’m sure your Dave will know.
I love Sugar Push- mitts and the name.

Welcome home! Your mitts look lovely, and I’m right behind you
These are such fun — another pair may go on my christmas knitting list. I’m sorry you hit so much humidity — heat is bad enough, but humidity is the WORST! Enjoy being back near the coast…

I saw Denise’s sock tonight and it is really lovely. The mitt version of that pattern is great also. I love all the cute names you came up with.
Bummer about Palm Springs. You should most definitely try the other location. You never know .. it could be better than Vegas. Although, I don’t know how it could be. The Vegas timeshare is one of the best ones I’ve ever stayed at.
Welcome back. I sure missed you at knit night.
