Four pattern rows

Panda Silk sockThis little sock has only four pattern rows… or is it eight? No it’s four. The second grouping is exactly the same as the first, only it’s offset by a stitch. Once on track for the row, it’s the same as before. Over all it’s easy to memorize, and I think it’ll look good in a variety of yarns.

As with the last several days or so, it didn’t seem like I really got much knitting done at all yesterday. Surprisingly, I’m nearing the point where I need to work the heel flap for this sock. It’s coming along quickly in spite of myself—er.

Yesterday morning was spent running errands. Dave’s truck battery turned up dead over the weekend, so we got that replaced. While we were out we did some banking that required both of us to be present. Gads. That was a lot more difficult than it needed to be. The bank I’ve been using for my business account lost my DBA paperwork some time between March and now, so wouldn’t allow me to deposit a check to that account. Honestly. They lost it. They had that paperwork since 2002. Well, they did—through March when I made the last deposits to that account. They were a royal pain about it, and didn’t apologize for the inconvenience caused, the special trip, the paperwork I had to lug along. (Well, maybe I didn’t “lug” it along, it’s only a single sheet of paper.) Instead we received glaring looks, filled with suspicion. How do they think we got that information on the account in the first place? Doh. We were at the bank for nearly 45 minutes, most of which time was spent by the woman “helping” us doing mysterious things in back. I think it must have taken her five full minutes to make a new copy of my old DBA.

Birdies on sillWhen we went in to the bank I’d planned on adding my new DBA to that account. Naw. Before we were done there, actually, before that woman returned, Dave and I decided to close the account. Next week, after that deposit has cleared we’ll go back and take care of the problem. I’ve already opened a new one at a new (to me) bank, where the people actually say hello when customers walk in the door, and the branch has a friendly feeling to it.

(Yes, I’m trying to distract you from this totally boring post with a picture of birds in silhouette on my railing. Did it work?)

Why is it so hard to find a good bank? And once found, why can’t they stay that way? Hopefully this new bank will work out well. They’re European-owned which I don’t know that I really like, except that they didn’t get involved with all the sub-prime lending, and so are in much better shape than most of the banks here. We’ll see. Fingers crossed.

If things don’t get better, we might actually consider closing all possible accounts, converting our assets to gold, and hiding it under the mattress.

The sock looks great! As for the gold-conversion, it might not be a bad idea, but I wouldn’t tell the neighbors ;)

Have you checked what the price of gold’s been doing through all of this stuff the last month? Contrary to the conventional wisdom of what it should do in a crisis, it’s down a lot.
