One of the main reasons my husband would never even attempt to learn to knit is all the ripping back that gets done. He’d get way too frustrated by that simple act, hurl the offending yarn and needles across the room, and never look at it again. So he doesn’t even try. This is probably good for everyone around—well, mainly me. If you guessed by this that I ripped knitting back again (no, not the brown dress, it’s still in timeout) you’d be right. This time it was the green Shibui sock. Friday I got almost the entire first repeat finished up (here’s a picture that’s close to how far I got), and decided to try it on. Let me say right now that I’m glad I tried it on before I got any further. Turns out that with all those twisted knit stitches and tiny cables and such that the gauge is much tighter than normal. The sock barely went over the wide spot of my foot, was tight on the instep, and there’s no way it was going over my heel. ![]()
Out it came.
I fetched larger DPNs, this time size 1½, and cast on. Again. This is as far as I got over the rest of the weekend. But this time I measured it against a comfortable sock before I got very far at all, and the size is dead on. Hooray!
Besides getting ripped back, the reason I didn’t get any farther on the sock over the weekend is that I finished up the cowl instead. It’s not blocked yet. I wanted to take it to knit night tonight, and knew there’s no way it’d dry in time. I’ll block it tomorrow. It’ll look a bit better when that gets done.
I wish I could get an accurate representation of the blue. It’s so frustrating. Anyway, I wonder if maybe I shouldn’t have made one of the larger sizes instead of the smallest one this time. Well, I have plenty of yarn left, I guess I could knit it a third time. Hm. I wonder if I could talk a local friend into knitting it for me, since I’ve already knit this thing twice. We’ll see.
In the picture below I tried to get up close to this yummy yarn so you can see it’s fuzzy goodness.

Ah, yes, ripping. It’s hard to get into the zen of ripping, especially when it’s for the umpteenth time!
