Golden shawl progress

Wright-inspired shawl 2009-04-16 1I didn’t post about it yesterday, but that doesn’t mean I didn’t get any knitting done. The golden shawl is growing quickly. I didn’t measure the length when I had it pinned out just now, but I did measure its width: 28 inches. It’s nice and wide, and it drapes beautifully, because of the silk. Wright-inspired shawl 2009-04-16 2On the one hand it’s light as a feather. On the other, it feels like it has substance. That’s probably the silk again.

The pictures look a little… odd. I laid out an old blue blanket on the bed, so you could actually see the shawl, but the light in that room isn’t as bright as it is upstairs, so the color’s a little off. And then there’s that old blue blanket. Well, I think you can see it well enough to get the idea.

You can clearly see the points that border the outer edge. They’ll be mirrored on the other side. Then there’s that basically blank area near the top of the pictures. That will continue across the center of the design. The lozenge and nupp motifs will be duplicated on the other end. I’m sizing this for both a scarf and a shawl, and I’m seriously considering including written instructions along with the charted ones. The basic design is so simple that I’m hoping it will have a broader appeal. I think it’ll look terrific in a variety of yarns.

Frank Lloyd Wright’s Glass DesignsI found another book I want: Frank Lloyd Wright’s Glass Designs. It’s part of a series of books called, Wright at a Glance. All the books in this series look terrific. There are quite a few of them.

Amanda and I chatted a bit about Frank Lloyd Wright’s houses the other day. She’s had the good fortune to be able to see his Fallingwater House. Incredible. Silly me, I thought all his houses were much, much farther east than California. Turns out he designed a number of California houses.Frank Lloyd Wright’s California Houses The few pictures I’ve found are stunning, of course, but if given my druthers, I’d live in that Fallingwater house before any of the California ones any day. That one’s more my style. But I digress. Turns out one of the Wright at a Glance books is on his California Houses. From the tiny bit of reading I’ve done, a number of the California houses have been damaged by earthquakes. It sounds like they’ve mostly been restored, though. Thankfully the homes had already been designated as National Historic Sites, so there was more incentive to fix them than to tear them down.

That’s coming along well! Your output is making me feel like a slacker on the knitting front….

I’m not surprised to hear that the Wright homes in California have had some…earthquake issues… It only makes sense, given the territory. At least they have historic status on their side.
