I’m home May 6, 2009
I’m home. Mom’s eye surgery went well. Her eyes are now both clear, and brown, and beautiful. No more milky cataracts for her to try to peer through. Especially the first couple of days after the surgery, she reported being amazed at how bright the sun is. The advances that have been made in cataract surgery the last couple of decades have been amazing. That someone can have the cataract cut out, a new lens inserted, and be able to see through it immediately is nothing short of astounding. There was a woman who went in to have her first eye done at the same time Mom went to have her second one done. Mom’s doctor was a tiny bit faster, so Mom and I were in recovery when the other woman was wheeled in. She was rolled into position, and opened her eyes. “I can see!” she exclaimed. Magic.
On the knitting front, I got a ton done on the shawl that was being so pesky before I left. In fact, I got so much done that when I got home all I had to do was to weave in the ends and block it. It’s on the bed right now, in fact, blocking its little heart out. The photos here are from a few days before that, just after I started the central motif.
Once I got the kinks out of the pattern, this shawl was really fun to knit. It went especially quickly once I got that wide border knit up.
On a related note, I don’t have a clue what to call this shawl. If you have an idea for it, please leave a comment to this post. If any one name strikes me in particular, I’ll use it. If several of your ideas float to the top, then I’ll run a poll. Either way, the winning name will get a .pdf copy of the pattern when it’s finished. Ideas will be collected through tomorrow, unless I find one particularly striking. The poll, if there is one, will start on Friday, and most likely run through the weekend.
While I was gone my fourth blogiversary came and went. I’d intended to write up a nice little blog post all about it before I left, and to schedule it to post on the appropriate day all by itself. I obviously didn’t get that far. The last four years have gone by amazingly quickly. Thank you all for hanging in there with me, and huge thank yous to each and every one of you who has taken the time to leave a comment for me. I love you all. Speaking of comments, there are a pile of them here that you left for me while I was gone, that are waiting to be answered. I’ll get to them soon, but perhaps not until tomorrow. Tons of stuff yet to do today…

Today I have been working with some illustrations by Redoute (can’t get the little accent mark on the E) and the blue of this shawl looks like the blue in the Phlox so I’d called it Redoute Phlox :) Or Lotus - very similiar to the blue in the Lotus - Redoute Lotus.
Happy Blogiversary! :)

Let’s see, the shawl is a nice blue and your mother just got her cataracts removed and you are wondering what to call the shawl? Seriously wondering?
All together now:
“I can see clearly now/the rain has gone/ going to be a bright bright sunshiney day”
I would suggest either ” I can see clearly now” or “bright bright sunshiney day.”

This shawl is simply lovely - you’ve out done yourself :) When I look at it I see “Midnight Garden” - lovely & mysterious.
Congrats on your mom’s successful surgery. My mom had both her eyes done and went from legally blind to perfect vision for the last year of her life. The gift of vision is a most precious thing.

Am I too late (again)?
Since there are so many diamonds, I suggest “Girl’s Best Friend”.
Congratulations for your mom’s recovery. That’s lovely to hear.

Well, happy belated blogiversary! I’m glad to hear your mom’s surgery went well. It is really amazing what they can do with eyes - I had LASIK almost exactly a year ago and I’m still a bit amazed that I can see.
