Red and gold

Tons of progress made on the new red scarf pattern yesterday. I even got it wet and pinned it out last night before going to bed, to see how far I really am, and to make sure that the pattern will work as expected. I don’t know about you, but I think it’s a winner.

What I needed was a name. I had a flash of inspiration early this morning. It was before breakfast. It’s always amazing when I can think so clearly before breaking my night’s fast and caffeinating myself. Here’s how it went: the triangular version of this design is Midnight Garden—red isn’t exactly a midnight-type color, red actually fading under moonlight—but it’s still a garden, and since scarves hang around the neck, the next jump was to hanging gardens. When I think of hanging gardens, I invariably think of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. That’s it! The scarf name is Babylon. Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright 7

While some designs practically name themselves, like Babylon, others are recalcitrant. You recently helped me name Midnight Garden, and I love the name. Now I need another pattern name, and again need your help. The golden shawl, the one inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s glass panels, is in sore need of a good name. It’ll be the same deal as before: post your shawl name ideas in the comments to this post. I’ll run a poll in early next week with the top design name suggestions. You’ll have a chance to vote for your favorite next week. The person who comes up with the name I use will get a free copy of the finished pattern.

My suggestion for a name of the lovely golden shawl: Alchemy.
Alchemists believed that, if they could only find the secret, they could turn lead into gold. Frank Lloyd Wright turned lead came into beautiful golden stained glass, reflected in this shawl.

Oak Park was Wright’s 1st home and his style was often called “prairie”. My 1st thought of a name was Oak Park Dream, but then Prairie Garden came to mind. Hmm…

The shapes of the panels reminded me of a wonderful lace mosaic or some beautiful parquetry. I suggest ‘Domus Aurea’ (Latin for “Golden House”) a Roman villa in which Nero’s architects covered the ceilings and walls in beautiful mosaics.

Hanging Gardens is really looking pretty. I especially love the red. I’m afraid I don’t have any name ideas for your Wright-inspired shawl however…
