Taking a close look May 28, 2009
Dave always complains when something strange looking grows in the yard, and I let it, when I won’t let him pull it out. I’m often rewarded, eventually, with a little plant-y surprise. ![]()
Like this thing. I’ve no idea what in the world it is. Dave says it’s a weed, and leaves it at that. From a
distance, it’s not all that. You start to get in a little closer, though, and you see that it has interesting leaves, attached individually to long, slim stems. ![]()
A little closer yet, and there’s a nice little surprise: tiny flower buds clustered at the end of each stem.
Peering around, there’s an even nicer surprise. The flowers at the end of one of the stems are open. Aren’t they delightful? They’re tiny and white, with pink centers those fabulous little pink stamens reaching out beyond the edge of their petals. I would have missed this little bit of floral beauty entirely, if I’d let Dave pull the plant out last fall when it showed up. That would have been tragic.
Babylon is done. Just needs to be blocked. Domus Aurea still needs to be photographed, but all the edits, other than photos, are in. The pattern will be ready soon, though at this rate, probably not until next week.

I confess I usually would follow Dave’s lead on the unknowns, but this case shows patience and tolerance can reap rewards! Beautiful little flowers.
